France And The New Charismatic Jihad; Obama Admin’s Strategy Vis-à-vis Violent Jihadis Is Naive And Will Only Invite More Attacks
Reuel Marc Gerecht, a former Middle East Targets Officer in the CIA’S clandestine service; and, a Senior Fellow at The Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, had an Op-Ed in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal, with the title above. “The terrorist attack in Paris on Wednesday, was long time coming,” he writes. Since the early 1990s, when Algeria’s savage [civil] war between the military junta, and the Islamists began to spill over into France, the French internal security-service, now known as the Direction central du renseignement interieur, or DCRI, began to ramp up its capacity to monitor Muslim militants. The DCRI, easily the most effective domestic intelligence organization [or one of the best] in the world, has been sounding the alarm for over a year,’ Mr. Gerecht writes, “warning that the Syrian insurrection against the Bashar Assad regime, was becoming too bloody, and too irresistibly magnetic for French Sunni Muslims,” to resist.
“If the French, who have more policemen and security officers per capita than any other Western country, cannot monitor and check Muslim extremists at home, Islamic radicals in Europe and elsewhere will surely take notice,” Mr. Gerecht warns. “The rise of the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq — the first time jihadism has successfully conquered and occupied any large territory — has introduced a historically, evocative charisma into Islamic fundamentalism.
And there is fertile recruiting ground for violent jihadists in France. There are “ghettos where terror breeds,” TheDailyMailOnline, noted this morning, which the publication described as “concrete warrens, divided into “boxes,” housing as many as 10,000 Muslims,” in what amounts to almost a refugee camp. This is a big problem for France, Europe and the West. But, one thing is for certain, the only thing these “guys” respect, is strength and force — not, appeasing rhetoric about, “why can’t we all just get along.
The famous French writer, historian, and philosopher Voltaire, once said, “I am very fond of the truth; but, not at all of martyrdom. The former seems to be in short supply, while the latter is all too evident. We have a POTUS and his staff who labeled Nidal Hassan, and the Ft. Hood shooting/massacre — ‘workplace violence’ — claimed the Benghazi Consulate attack was the result of an anti-Islam video; and, they seemingly can’t bring themselves to utter terrorism and Islam in the same sentence. It is this vacuous, and bankrupt view of the enemy, and threat we face, that is viewed as weakness by the adversary. As the noted military strategist, Carl von Clausewitz once wrote, “the most far-reaching act of judgment that a statesman and commander have to make, is to establish…the kind of war on which they are embarking; neither mistaking it for, nor trying to turn it into, something that is alien to its nature.” France learned that the hard way yesterday; and, America will not be immune. This POTUS and his administration continue to treat the jihadi threat as a legal matter; and attempting to try violent jihadists in a court room. This is a profound, strategic mistake and it fails to understand and appreciate the kind of war we are in. The closing of Guantanamo, liberals said, would lead to less ‘hatred’ of the U.S. overseas. But, this naïve judgment fails to appreciate the history of militant Islamic attacks against the U.S., when Guantanamo was just an American outpost in Cuba. The Marine Barracks bombing in Beirut, Lebanon in 1983, the 1993 and 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, the bombing of the USS Cole and the U.S. embassy bombings in Africa — all preceded the opening of Guantanamo Bay Prison for holding violent jihadis. These ‘guys’ hate us; and, want to kill us — regardless of whether or not we put violent jihadists in prison there. America continues to follow a policy and philosophy that if we just leave them alone, if we don’t do anything like publish an anti-Islam video, or a cartoon mocking the Prophet Mohammad, all will be well. How is that working out?
Instead of maintaining Guantanamo, or something like it, the POTUS is putting Americans at risk by recklessly emptying the facility as fast as he can — which is one of the purported reasons former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel sought to leave his post — earlier than he otherwise might have. We no longer attempt to capture high-value militant jihadists anymore, we just drone them wherever they are. While temporarily satisfying, this is equivalent to the U.S. attempting to kill Nazi’s — one storm-trouper at a time. And, ‘dead men tell no tales.’ Instead of attempting to garner critical ‘battlefield intelligence,’ this administration has chosen to use targeted killing and appeasing rhetoric in the hopes of mitigating the violent jihadi threat. This kind of stance has done nothing but inspire them to conduct more such attacks. But, this POTUS and his team, who have consistently underestimated this threat — saying al Qaeda had been defeated and on the run; and, referred to ISIS as “the JV Team,” appear incapable of fully appreciating this growing cancer; and, what it will take to defeat them.
